So the VM's were Powered OFF as soon as the first NIC was removed ?
Do you have both the NIC on vSwitch0 is configured as Active or one NIC Active for Management and other for vMotion and other on standby?
As you have mentioned Host Isolation Response would had mode the VM's to Powered OFF
