How do I change the default directory into which VM files are created/stored?

Hello VMware community.

I apologize in advance, if this is a really easy question that I should have been about to figure out for myself.

I am a complete noob with ESXi and apparently I also couldn't come up with the right search terms to find what I'm looking to do.

I would just like to setup a newly-deployed, stand-alone, ESXi 5.1 host, so that all VMs I create on this host will automatically have their configuration files, etc. stored in a sub-directory of datastore1.

For example: datastore1/VMs/vm001

In other words, I don't want each VMs directory in the "root" of datastore1 - instead I want it in datastore1/<VM Directory>

I've found documentation on how to change where scratch files are stored for a VM, but nothing that seems to tell me how to set the location to which VM files are written, by default.

I've also seen documents that tell me how to alter a particular VM's configuration file to have it point to a new location, but what I'm looking to do is more global and automatic - alter a default setting once, and then have all subsequent VMs created on the host, automatically put into the new sub-directory.

Is this possible, and if so, where can I set the default Virtual Machine directory path?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me, here!
