I read somewhere that Hyper-V works better in Windows 8.1 then VMware Workstation, so you might want to give it a try!
Hey, I'm just messing with you as I read your "Look, if you're tempted, please don't suggest "use another virtualization solution"" comment in the other thread. BTW IMO There is nothing wrong with one suggesting one to try/use other products if/when applicable. On my Mac I have VMware Fusion, Parallels and VirtualBox installed and use all three, although I primarily use VMware Fusion. On Windows and Linux Hosts I do only use VMware Player/Workstation.
Are you aware of the VMware Workstation Technology Preview 2013? You could give that a try or just extract out the VMware Tools windows.iso image and try using the VMware Tools from it under VMware Workstation 9.
