Well, as written the steps fail...
First, your directions start with "/usr/bin/vmware-installer -u vmware-workstation" which should remove all vmware* directories under "/usr/lib" however to be sure, I presume, you then say "rm -rf /usr/lib/vmware*". So assuming one then continues to follow the rest of the steps as you've laid forth, then "cd /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source" fails since it was removed during the uninstall process and no longer exists with nothing to patch since the steps you've laid forth do not include reinstalling VMware Workstation at any point! 
I am curious about what you mean by "Other commands exist in your home directory but you can omit them if you wish."?
