Is it just the single server that you were looking to run as a virtual machine or did you have other machines you were looking to virtualize - if it was just the one machine I would just run that machine as a physical on your big "fire breathing server" server - If you have other machines you want to virtualize yes you can use Oracle's virtualbox but you will find that you might run into resource contention with the virtual machines since it is a hosted virtualization platform in that it installs on top of another Operating System while ESXi installs directly on the hardware. You can also take a look at VMware Player which is free but it is also a hosted virtualization platform installing on top of windows or Linux so you will face the same limitations.
